It isn’t until the next day when you see the morning news that you figure out exactly what happened. It seems the player who tackled Watkins was the assassin – according to the news reports, the rival player for the Detroit Lions was carrying a gun in the waist band of his uniform pants and as soon as he had the chance, he fired a single shot directly into the heart of Watkins at point blank range, killing him instantly. The assassin then quickly took off his helmet and ran off the field. He was caught before leaving Lambeau Field, however, and is now in police custody.
