Haley hands the ball off to the popular Mike Watkins, as he normally does on first and ten. The crowd erupts with applause, just as they always do whenever Watkins handles the ball – they know he is capable of anything when he’s running. But nobody expects what happens next.
Watkins breaks free from one tackle, and suddenly there is only one person left between him and the goal – they smack into each other with a ferocity only seen by the strongest animals in the wild, and the sound of their pads smacking one another’s echo throughout the stadium – however, the crowd soon realizes that it wasn’t the pads they heard echoing, but instead a single gunshot.
